It’s been said that there’s nothing new under the sun. And if you consider sacred geometry, our topic from last month, you’ll see that this is true.

Sacred geometry is the repetition of shapes throughout nature and time. Two examples are the spiral of a conch shell and the almond shape within the Vesica Piscis (two circles overlapping). These and the other sacred geometric shapes have been broken down into mathematical formulas and patterns, and illustrate the molecular shapes that are the very basis of life.

The hexagonal cells of a bee’s honeycomb is another example of sacred geometry, and the basis of life for honeybees. Every single cell in the honeycomb is exactly the same. Great minds like Charles Darwin, naturalist William Tegetmeier and others who’ve studied the hexagonal honeycomb cells, all agreed that:

  • It’s the optimal shape for the cells, because it uses the least amount of material to hold the most weight
  • It’s the most efficient and least wasteful shape found in nature
  • It takes the least amount of work for the bees in terms of intake of honey vs. energy spent to build.

Bees create the hives in which they live, protect their queen, nurture their young and store the nectar they take from the flowers. Once the nectar ripens into honey, the bees consume it. Then they produce the wax that holds the nectar. Tegetmeier was one of the first to discover that bees need to take in 8 ounces of honey in order to produce just 1 ounce of wax.

Understanding how much work that takes, Tegetmeier and other scientists, through observation and speculation, found that the hexagon, with its six sides, is economically the best choice of shape for the bees. Reason being, when putting together hexagons, all sides touch, for an economy of space. Sides touch in a series of squares and triangles, but as master mathematicians, economists and architects, the bees have figured out through their evolution that the hexagon is the optimal shape. And in 1999, a Michigan scientist closed the loop by proving it mathematically. That proof is known as the “Honeybee Conjecture.” (Sounds like a title of an episode of The Big Bang Theory.” 😊)

So, what’s the connection of the honeybee and their hexagonal cells to our lives?

First, one of the best known hexagons is The Star of David, the symbol of Judaism. It is also a symbol to Rastafarians, Tibetan Buddhists and Wiccans. In Christianity, the six points of a hexagon symbolizes the six days of creation. This shape is also associated with the heart chakra.

Food is our life force. But in the face of Colony Collapse Disorder, our food supply is challenged. Honeybees are a critical part of the agricultural process, and the loss of so many colonies is a true threat to our food supply.

But what it truly comes down to is the tiny little honeybee. So diminutive, so petite. But just one can cause an entire picnic of people to run for it. That tiny little thing has a mighty sting! That is power.

To add to this power, we know that when these tiny beings join with other worker bees, they can build an entire hive. This power can speak to every one of us when we feel insignificant and powerless.

The next time you feel immobilized or weak, think of the powerful honeybee, and know that you can triumph over any challenge.
