The Meaning of the Meerkat in Shamanism

Though the word “kat” appears in their name, Meerkats are a part of the mongoose family. Fully grown, they are only about 2 pounds and 11 inches long.

Symbolically, Meerkat teaches us how to break free from emotional chains and connect with genuine people. Meerkat can also support, educate and guide you.

Some of that symbolism comes from the fact that they are pack animals. There is usually one leader (often a female) and about 25 individuals. Packs don’t always interact well with other packs, unless they are part of a larger network of packs.

Meerkats can burrow up to five feet underground, clear out a space about 16 feet wide, and create more than one entrance. The burrow might connect by tunnels to other similar burrows. The meerkats use the burrows to spend the nights and to birth their pups. Once the pups are born, the pack members raise them, as if they subscribe to the “it takes a village” concept.

Though family oriented within their packs, there is competition among the packs. And though packs are typically led by females, there is always a head male who is the breeder who shows his power by making sure the other males in the pack keep their distance from the dominant female. She, in turn, makes sure the subordinate females keep their distance from her, as she is getting ready to deliver her pups, because she knows she might be killed by a subordinate with aspirations of taking over her top spot.

Meerkats possess hyper senses, using their well-defined sight, hearing and ability to smell to help them scout out their prey.

If Meerkat is showing up in your life in pictures, words, a movie or book, or even in conversation, it might mean that:

  • You need to get out of your rut, loosen up and give yourself the freedom to be your authentic self
  • You need to stretch yourself to start thinking and living outside your comfort zone
  • You really need some “play” time
  • There is a sense of impending danger or a threat, and you need more information
  • You should start honing your senses, including your psychic ones
  • You need to start a family or community
  • You are most likely a protector of young ones, or you act as a helper in their education
  • You need to stand up to “invaders” who threaten your “den,” “pups” or “terrain”
